Hands On: Gant Rugger On Bleecker

— Thu, 29th April 2010 —

Sales are slow goin’ this time of year, so we decided to check out the new Gant Rugger store on Bleecker, and get up close & personal with the gear. Typified by the ’50s-Mad-Men-(by-way-of-New-Haven)-office-themed changing room, Gant clearly put some thought into the store’s atmospherics. And, while we wish they’d gone a little easier with the logos, the clothes are pretty well thought out, too. Youthful for sure, but far more sophisticated and restrained than, say, Polo’s Rugby label. Credit Swedish-born designer Christopher Bastin for that. Prices, meanwhile, are reasonable.

Smoke ’em if you got ’em in the changing room inspired by founder Bernard Gant’s factory floor office

Calender in the changing room says April, 1955… so does the wood paneling

Eat your heart out, J. Press (Jackets $250-$500)

Play ball! (Varsity jackets for $200)

Leather cord locks on waxed-cotton parka… check

All shirts are made from archival fabrications, and, yes, they’re as supple as they look ($110-$125)

On this lightweight madras pullover, the buttons stop here

Jeans & pants $100-$200

The back of a “Hugger” oxford — the slimmest Rugger, and cut from selvage oxford cloth

Looks like a suspender, functions like a belt ($55)

  1. I can’t wait to visit this weekend. Thanks for the great photos.

  2. The fit is really tailored (including the jackets). Unfortunately, too slim for my taste, but the fabrics are quite nice (esp. the sportscoats)

  3. They gave out 15% coupons over the weekend in cute little IPOD cases that are made of shirt pockets 🙂
