Need To Know

— Thu, 6th November 2008 —

Business at consignment shops is booming, according to a story in this week’s Journal. And in New York, there are two resale shops you NEED to know about: Gentlemen’s Resale, which we profiled in September; and INA, which consists of several locales, including a Men’s Store on Mott St (pictured), and a Men’s+Women’s Store on Bleecker.

Hands down, INA has the best consignment merch in the city, given that much of it comes directly from film/fashion shoots. Name a designer — Dries Van Noten, Dsquared, Dior — and these guys carry it at no less than 50% off retail. Twice a year, they take an additional 70% off existing mark-downs — the next such sale expected to go down in January. But, whenever you go, do so with a list *and your measurements* to prevent becoming overwhelmed by the expansive and tightly crammed selection.

Recession’s Spoils

— Wed, 5th November 2008 —

This is big. The Beggar has learned that every Ralph Lauren store in the city is quietly reducing nearly all fall wear by 40%. The unexpected move is expected to last about a week, but it varies from store to store. The RRL Nolita store, for instance, is already in sale mode, while the temporary Ralph Lauren — pronounced LOR-en! — on Madison and 80th plans to begin mark-downs Thursday. The Rugby Store, meanwhile, might not kick off what’s being called a “private” sale until next week. You can also catch the sale online.

**Update: Rugby has gotten into the game, and through Monday, 11/17, will be taking a full 50% off its fall collection, and 25% off classics.**

**Update 2: Through the holidays, RL stores citywide are maintaining sales sections where you can find market-downs of 25-50% off select merch. If you’re looking for something specific, you might have better luck online. Oh, and the sale’s done at the Rugby store unless you have college ID, in which case you can get 15% off, or a “friends and family” coupon, which will get you 30% off.**

Sitting On The Sidelines

— Wed, 5th November 2008 —

Got a few bucks to spend on your wardrobe? Save it. For the next few weeks, at least. Retailers citywide are moving up sales that would normally wait until December. A clerk at Jeffrey told us today to check back in two weeks — very early for the exclusive boutique.
