The Cut gives the head’s up on vintage clothing Shangri-La Beacon’s Closet, which, come November, will be moving a full six blocks from 5th Ave near Union St to 92 5th Ave at Warren — This is Park Slope we’re talkin’ here. Anyway, the big news is that the new locale is about twice the size of the old one. [The Cut]

Ready For The Fall?

— Tue, 16th September 2008 —

If not the best deal of the season, we most certainly stumbled upon the best-priced, highest-quality pea coat for fall and winter. And at Berdorf’s of all places!

Behold the soft wool Barbour hardy pea coat for about $450, which you’ll find at Berdorf’s and the Barbour store on Madison. That’s about 1/3 the cost of the most celebrated wool pea of the season from Martin Margiela, which — in both construction and design — we dare say is no better than the Barbour. Even a Bergdorf’s sales clerk said, “We couldn’t believe it when we saw the price.”

Stronger Sales

— Mon, 15th September 2008 —

Keep in mind that every Gruen Eyes high-end eyewear boutique in the city has quietly set up a ‘sale section’ where you’ll find an impressive batch of frames and sunglasses from the likes of Oliver Peoples and Paul Smith discounted by as much as 50%. This is not a temporary development, according to one Gruen clerk, but who knows.

You can also get $50 off you next purchase at a Gruen store by signing up to their newsletter online — but we doubt this deal applies to discounted frames.

Buyers’ Market

— Mon, 15th September 2008 —

Here’s a video from Portfolio.com featuring silly fashion industry types discussing the impact the economy is having on business. (No, no Bruno in sight.) We thought it only appropriate to post it on a day that could very well end up looking a lot like October 28, 1929. (Seriously, driving through Midtown in a cab last night, we witnessed a mob-like crowd gathering in front of Lehman Brothers HQ.)

For you, the consumer, know that brands and retailers will increasingly be hunkering down, playing it safe, compromising, and competing for your dollars. That means more sales, more deals, and more opportunities to advantage of. At least for the time being, we are indeed living in a buyers market.
