Zuckerberg’s Expensive Hoodie Habit

— Wed, 9th May 2012 —

We don’t do much analysis around here, but the case of Mark Zuckerberg potentially alienating investors with his hoodie is too intriguing to ignore. “He’s actually showing investors he doesn’t care that much,” a financial analyst tells Bloomberg TV. “I think that’s a mark of immaturity. I think that he has to realize he’s bringing investors in as a new constituency right now, and I think he’s got to show them the respect that they deserve because he’s asking them for their money.” (If you’re not aware, Facebook is currently meeting with potential investors ahead of its highly anticipated IPO.)

Of course, the tech community is taking Zuck’s side — calling the analyst’s views obsolete — but it’s ignoring the fact that powerful people stand by certain codes of dress and behavior. That’s the world we live in, and, while change and change agents like Zuck are inevitable, standards that were set long before he was born still reign. Will the boy wonder’s casual style hurt his (or Facebook’s) bottom line? Probably not. (It certainly did nothing to diminish the currency of Steve Jobs or Apple.) But, even the suggestion that a hoodie could cost billions of dollars speaks volumes about the state of menswear, and, at the very least, should give a guy pause before his next appeal to power.
