If you’re over in the Meatpacking, Adam‘s taking up to 65% off pre-fall high-end basics, like pima cotton henleys, polos, and crew necks, striped cardigans and cashmere hoodies with thermal linings… If you’re adept at layering, this stuff’s good year ’round.

Note: It’s officially late December, but Adam’s on a very short list of shops taking +50% — or even +40% — off F/W stock. Obviously conservative compared to recent years, the collective restraint is the result of a healthier retail climate; an attempt by businesses to retrain consumers to pay full price; and a surge in alternative discount channels led by Gilt. Still, that doesn’t mean we won’t see in-store markdowns of up to 70% — or 80% — before spring. In fact, before 2008 — when Saks incited a discount frenzy with 80% cuts in November — it was standard to expect such reductions in January and February (typically the slowest months for retailers). What does all this mean for in-store shoppers? Most likely, something to look forward to in the new year.
