It’s hot. And, save for severe drunkenness, heat is more damaging to one’s outward appearance and composure than any force known to man. Sure, we’d all like to keep it together like our man on the right. But, like the poor chap on the left, the merciless humidity and sewage sauna that is NYC’s subway system leaves many a good man defeated — literally falling to pieces. On a recent weekend stay in Montauk, a friend suggested that we check out Tauk — a little boutique across the street from the sleepy surfing town’s single-screen movie house. On the surface, it’s indistinguishable from the souvenir shops you’ll find in any tourist destination along the Eastern Seaboard, complete with rope bracelets and all the beach gear you can carry. Look harder, however, and the hand of a sophisticated buyer reveals itself. Moscot sunglasses; shirts by Smith + Butler and Build by Wendy; espadrilles and thick canvas totes fit for city summers; … As the picks that follow should illustrate, we found that Tauk is indeed worth a brief retreat from the sun.
