Red Alert – Unis Sample Sale

— Thu, 8th January 2009 —

An extremely helpful tipster — our friend and furniture seller/blogger Kyle — sends word that the sample sale at Unis has commenced… and he went to the trouble of sending us a pic of the price list! Much appreciated!

The “friends and family” event (all are welcome) should go until at least 7 p.m., tonight, but you might call ahead to confirm. The official sale, featuring only past seasons, is going down from 12 noon tomorrow through Sunday, 1/18.

Side note: Self-serving though it may sound, the more tips (with pics!) you send us, the more valuable a service we can provide to all of you.

Choosy Beggars

— Thu, 8th January 2009 —

For our latest “Choosy Beggars” segment, we’d like to commend Clarke here on several fronts: For putting together a respectable look just to catch a weeknight flick not far from his home on the Upper West Side; for incorporating the subtlest bit of color to contrast the gloomy post-holidays winter night; and, most importantly, for having the foresight to pick up a Steven Alan trench in this season’s sharpest pattern — blackwatch — last season at 70% off.

Going Out Of Business (?) Sale

— Thu, 8th January 2009 —

In store and online, a Racked tipster brings word that Saks has increased markdowns to a full 80%… even though some sales items had already been reduced by as much as 90% since early December.

**Update: Readers are writing in with some inspiring stories/intel: “I got a Versace leather jacket last night for $425 – retail $1895. Damn. Some other good stuff too, lots of jeans, some jackets and lots of random shirts/sweaters on the 80% off racks. Clerk told me its been really slow and for future sales he expects some consolidation sales – stuff from other stores that isn’t selling that they’ll bring to NY where, even while slow, still more traffic.“**

In Your Hands

— Thu, 8th January 2009 —

We like nothing more than to be able to say with certainty just where you should be investing your money at any given moment. Through Saturday, that place is Billy Reid‘s Bond Street boutique, where you’ll find 25% off everything, including already reduced clothing and shoes. Well-made and dripping with laid-back Southern charm, Reid represents a return to refined American masculinity, and, in our humble opinion, the future of mens wear. As we told you last week, the deals — sans the additional 25% markdown — can also be had online.
Wool-cashmere jackets for a mere $230 before additional markdown. (No, we didn’t take this picture.)
Fine cord jackets for just over $200.
At close to $150, these shoes are a steel.
Logging boot for $180 before additional markdown.

Walk, Don’t Run

— Thu, 8th January 2009 —

We found a respectable selection, but less than totally insane prices — at least for an end-end-END-of season sale — at Gargyle this afternoon. Through Friday, Common Projects are still $250, and Rachel Comey’s are still $195. Come on Gargyle, we know you guys can do a little better than that!
Online, you can still find some nice deals, like the above black Rogues Gallery cardigan for $140. (The code ilovegcc08 might still get you an additional 20% off, but, once again, we’re not making any promises.)
